Re: Amazon Alexa ....anyone got one?
I have no idea why anyone would want one of those fucking things.

Fuck off Alexa.

I'm sorry I can't help you with that.

I'd smash the fucking thing to pieces very quickly.

Good point Mike..How do you set it up so when you clap your hands it does that?

Re: Amazon Alexa ....anyone got one?
The snippets they collect are not themselves that relevant or important - it's when they get correlated with other, similar, snippets that things people would rather not become public knowledge do so.

It's like putting together a meme jigsaw of somebody's life. The big worry is, as I mentioned earlier, collecting individual snippets is not something that, alone, could be considered "intrusion". And piecing together that data is not considered an offence either as doing so has no detrimental effect on the individual, plus, it's generally not done by the organisation that harvests the snippets.

That means that it's not then technically illegal to release that information (to the highest bidder) on the internet as it was never in the possession of, or owned by to whom it refers.

But you're right. It's all worth it so long as you can clap your hands and the lights dim.

Everyone knows that. Everyone. We just don't care because we live boring lives. Almost all of us aren't spies or paedophiles. If Big Gubment wants to listen in on me moaning to my son that I've tripped over his work boots on the dark landing AGAIN, they are welcome to do so.

Just the 45 years, 67.

Recently been working on a secure network that makes the Dark Net look like the Blackpool illuminations by comparison.

Couple of the civil servants involved decided that they could save some money use these to monitor some of the more remote locations rather than install a proper monitoring system.

Opened a few eyes when they saw what they were capable of.

Actually, that first bit is 100% true. Physically switch off a phone less than 3 years old and after a few minutes it switches itself back on again in "stealth mode" (meaning YOU have no way of knowing by just looking at it, or even by switching it back on again).

It broadcasts it's whereabouts to the nearest network using GPS data, (the receiver of which it also activates). They can also automatically switch the microphone & camera(s) on, but the cameras tend to draw too much power so that generally only happens on demand by a signal from some command centre. Behaviour is normally determined by the government of the country within which the phone happens to be.

None of this you will be aware of. Most of this you don't want to be aware of, so la-la-la, fingers in the ears time.

You can stop this by putting the phone in a Faraday cage (soft versions are commercially available, some in a rather fetching bright pink), but then, you wouldn't be able to know if anybody has "liked" you recently, because the incoming signal will also be cut off.

Re: Amazon Alexa ....anyone got one?
But they ARE great at sending "innocuous" audio snippets about your kids activities and movements to the dark net so that the local nonce fraternity can buy a summary.

Fine by me if you don't want to think along those lines. No skin off my fore.

There shit at current news, just ask it during a game what the score is, tells you all about some random event from 50 years ago, never once does it tell me West Ham are 4 up with 10 minutes to play.

Try telling it at every available opportunity that you'd like to gain some kind of sovereignty over your life.

Someone in government might notice and send you a copy of Stanlake's Introductory Economics.

I really hate all this linked technology business. Was looking through photos on a camera once then they spontaneously popped up on the television. I didn't order that!

It means more devices/companies will know even more about you.

Seems like a very bad idea to me....

OK, but not yours though.

I'd want to be happy enough to not gain my contentment through trying to put others down.
